snow removal
January 24th, 2009
Madison officials would prefer not to dip further into the citys reserve fund for snow removal before Jan. 1. Tim Wobbeking, a meteorologist for WKOW-TV in Madison, said that wont be an option. “Well be getting a few inches Friday,” he said. “Some people have said 5 to 9, but that looks to be a bit high at this point. Theyll definitely have to plow, though.”
BOUNTIFUL — Police will begin issuing citations Dec. 27 to vehicles parked on city streets during snow removal operations. Fines for illegal parking range from $12 if paid within seven days to $20 after seven days. Vehicles parked illegally may be towed at the owners expense.

wedding speeches

There was high excitement when 200 pupils attended the wedding of two fellow students. But the marriage was only a mock-up organised as part of GCSE religious education curriculum at Houghton Kepier School, Houghton-le-Spring. The schools head of religious education and personal social health and citizenship education Eileen Osborne explained the event had been devised to help Key Stage Four students with the Christianity unit of their GCSE studies.

Q As more hotels implement wireless high-speed Internet access, what is keeping them from leveraging that investment across other guest-facing applications? A The drawbacks are the cost of the wireless network and a lack of killer wireless applications to drive the return on investment. –Tom Litchford, industry manager, retail hospitality, Microsoft Wireless interoperability and how it ties back into the hotel property-management system. A fully accredited Florida college has become the first such institution to offer a two-year Associate of Science degree for those entering the pool and spa industry. Keiser College, with nine campuses statewide, is partnering with Horner Equipment of Florida Inc., the Fort Lauderdale-based manufacturer/distributor, to present the program–which will be offered exclusively online. Those completing the program will receive a degree in aquatic engineering. One of [the industrys] underlying weaknesses has been its lack of respect as a profession, he said. There are no formal or accredited programs for the industry. This is my attempt to acknowledge that we are a profession.
A NORTH East college has made a bid for a place in the history books as it applies to become the first ever to award its own degrees. Next month, New College Durham, in Framwellgate Moor, Durham City, will apply to become the first FE institution to give out foundation degrees without accreditation from a university. It will be considered by the Privy Council, which acts as a regulator of universities. If the move is approved, the college will undergo a six-year probationary period before gaining the powers to award the twoyear, work-related degrees.

FAST CARS, COOL RIDES: THE ACCELERATING WORLD OF YOUTH AND THEIR CARS Amy Best London: New York University Press 2006, 256 pp, AUD 37.95 ISBN: 0814799310 The rich stories that emerge from this case study, of how one group uses one commodity, will interest those who are fascinated by the intricacies of youth culture, and consumer culture; those who crave more depth in explanations of why modern society is so car dependent; or, are curious about how to explain social practice by bringing together multiple forms of data, from individual interviews through to market research and historical accounts of place. Best provides a fascinating and in-depth ethnography of youth car cultures at San Jose, Silicon Valley in the US. This work offers insights into the protocols, purposes and performances that occur within several car-dependent youth scenes: including moving slowly while cruising, moving fast while racing, and building vehicles (and identities) at auto shop class. In and out of these situations, Best explains how young people use cars to negotiate between their desires and the boundaries they experience: such as police surveillance and control, family rules and responsibilities, and managing financially. The author provides critical accounts of the less tangible boundaries which operate within youth car cultures: gender relations; notions of ethnicity, history and community; contests over place; the forces of auto marketing; industrial, population and economic change; and, mechanisms of class reproduction.
Wilbur explained that while there are typically an array of outstanding and appealing concept cars [a.k.a., cool cars] shown by the major OEMs, more often than not these cars and trucks experience an ignominious disappearance as they do the show circuit before being inventoried [or worse]. A reason this is the case is because the nature of major OEMs is that theyre ordinarily interested in volume, not variety. And concept cars are niche vehicles almost by nature, and niches are places the majors visit all too infrequently. So ASC is intending to build a plant in North America–the site is to be selected in 06–that is dedicated to niche vehicle production for OEM customers. Wilbur said the plant will be about 500,000- to 600,000-f[t.sup.2] and will employ from 450 to 800 people. Based on two shifts, Wilbur reckons the annual volume will be 50,000 units. Of that number the plan would be to make five or more different vehicles–not the same platform with different top hats, but totally distinct vehicles, even for different OEMs–on the same line. To do this, they would deploy what Wilbur called humination, a play on human and automation, all of which is to say that this would be a people-centric, low-investment tooling approach to production. Given that many a cool car has been built in a garage, this approach makes sense.–GSV

To address the teacher shortage, some states have developed special associates degrees in teacher education. This article explores the prevalence and structure of these specialized associates degrees and presents a case for their development to smooth the transfer pathway for community college students who wish to become teachers. Keywords: associate of arts in teaching; teacher education; community colleges; articulation; transfer Most states today are grappling with a teacher shortage. The U.S. Department of Education has estimated that the demand for teachers in the nations public schools will reach 4 million by 2015, an increase of 17% from 2003 (Hussar Bailey, 2006). The latest figures available show that 74% of all public schools reported teaching vacancies during the 2003-2004 school year (Strizek, Pittsonberger, Riordan, Lyter, Orlofsky, 2006, p. 39). The demand for new teachers is especially intense in states that attract high numbers of immigrants, such as Florida, Georgia, and Texas. Even if the number of children attaining school age as a result of the baby boom echo declines by 2008, the teacher shortage in many parts of the United States will continue because of population growth and immigration patterns.
An associate degree is a college degree awarded after the completion of about 20 classes. It either prepares students for a career following graduation or allows them to transfer into a bachelors degree program. Associate degrees are available from public community colleges, private 2-year colleges, for-profit technical institutes, and many 4-year colleges and universities. More information can be found in Associate degree: Two years to a career or a jump start to a bachelors degree, in Occupational Outlook Quarterly, Winter 2002-03.

video conferencing

Videophones have finally gone mainstream–at least in the US. So says the Wall Street Journal, which reported in late August that desktop phones with video-call capabilities are going mass-market. Whether this amounts to mainstream is debatable–even the WSJ piece notes that despite the growing availability of broadband to enable video-calls, video-phones only work with other video-phones. On the other hand, the article notes, video could be the secret ingredient to push telephony into the IP realm for good.

Video consumption is exploding online, and on-demand is going to be the dominant way to consume content, Miller said last month at the MIPTV/MILIA trade show. snow plow
January 2nd, 2009
Falling snow is soon followed by thoughts of how to remove it from walks and drives so lifes normal routine can continue. A growing method of snow removal is by means of a snowthrower or blower. Such machines can clear an average driveway in minutes. We use-tested a single stage (no blower chamber) Snapper Model 3201 snowthrower last winter at Flower and Garden and were impressed with the aggressive way it sliced away at the accumulated snow. The high speed of the three horsepower engine created an auger torque that threw snow up to 18 feet. The auger gathered the snow to the center impeller section where it sent a continuous stream through the discharge chute. The chute — which can be rotated 200 degrees — has an adjustable deflector cap that controls the throwing distance from three to 18 feet.
Ingersoll tractors provide year-round versatility. The 48-inch single-stage snow blowers feature a high-speed auger and wide discharge chute that easily delivers snow where the operator desires. For added convenience, the chute, deflector and skid shoes are all easily adjustable. The heavy-duty 44- and 54-inch utility blades will easily handle snow removal and tough grading chores. Both blades offer 3 operating positions and adjustable skid shoes. The down pressure available from the tractors hydraulic system ensures clean drives and walks–even with packed snow. Protection for the elements is also available with a snow cab. Fill in 156 on reader service form or visit http://OneRs.hotims.com/13966.156 [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

PLEASANTON — Driving through town this week, looking into your side or rearview mirrors, you probably caught a glimpse of something classic. Custom hot rods, classic roadsters and suped-up muscle cars — more than 3,000 pre-1955 classics — rolled into the Alameda County Fairgrounds Saturday for the Good Guys 20th Texaco/Havoline West Coast Nationals, converting the grounds into a giant parking lot car enthusiasts were happy to get lost in. She attended with her father, Paul Wegfahrt, 68, who said the cars take him back to a different time. “I see a lot of memories.” He said his first car was a 51 Chevy.

mesothelioma
December 26th, 2008
Mesothelial proliferations can present with different architectural forms in the serosal membranes. Most commonly, mesothelial tumors are found in the pleura and peritoneal cavity. Of these lesions, approximately 75% are epithelial, and approximately 25% are biphasic. The epithelial masses usually display a papillary or tubulopapillary architecture. This pattern is typical of well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma of the peritoneum most often seen in females.1 Rarely, a similar proliferation is encountered in the tunica vaginalis of the testis.2 We present a case of papillary mesothelioma of the paratesticular region that demonstrated features placing it in a borderline diagnostic continuum between benignity and malignancy.
There is general agreement that the microscopic characteristics of an adenocarcinoma involving the pleura and an epithelioid mesothelioma overlap in the hematoxylin-eosin-stained slide. Additional studies such as electron microscopy and immunohistochemical stains are needed for proper identification.1 We describe a pleural tumor with “typical” features of mesothelioma in the hematoxylin-eosin stain slide that with further studies was reclassified as adenocarcinoma. A 75-year-old male retired biology teacher with a history of hypertension, transient ischemic attack, and depression and a remote history of smoking presented with dry cough, respiratory distress, and weight loss of several months duration. A chest radiograph showed left side pleural effusion. The patient underwent thoracentesis. Cytology of the pleural fluid was positive for malignant cells, with a differential diagnosis of epithelioid mesothelioma versus adenocarcinoma. Subsequently, the patient underwent partial pleurectomy. The pleurectomy specimen was characterized by fragments of fibrous connective tissue lined by mesothelial cells with focal papillary area. Normal mesothelium was found in continuity with hyperplastic stratified and papillary structure without invasion of the underlying fibrous connective tissue. The cells were cuboidal in the hyperplastic and papillary areas, with an increased nucleocytoplasmic ratio, round bland nuclei with low mitotic activity, and inconspicuous nucleoli (Figure 1). Thus, a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma, epithelioid type was rendered. However, additional clinical inflammation challenged the diagnosis of epithelioid mesothelioma. The patient had a 4.4-cm perihilar mass; furthermore, the patient also had a probable brain mass (2 small enhancing lesions evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging), bony metastasis (multiple areas of increasing uptake evaluated by bone scan) and a 3-cm lesion in the right kidney (based on computed tomographic scan). All this additional clinical information favored a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma rather than malignant mesothelioma. Subsequent studies of this tumor showed that it stained positive for Leu Ml, CK7, D-PAS, and alcian blue (hyaluronidase resistant) and negative for calretinin, carcinoembryonic antigen, and CK20 (Figure 2). Electron microscopic study showed tumor cells with short, widely spaced microvilli and some cells forming ductlike lumen and apical junction complex (Figure 3). All of these studies supported a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma.
A possible cancer-causing link has been found between asbestos fibers and a monkey virus, SV40, that infects people in the U.S., as reported in a study in the Aug. 31 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research, conducted by Michele Carbone at the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center of Loyola University Medical Center (Maywood, IL), offers preliminary evidence that the virus, Simian virus 40 (SV40), and asbestos fibers work together to transform healthy cells into malignant ones, resulting in mesothelioma, a rare and fatal form of cancer. Infection with SV40 apparently became widespread during the late 1950s and early 1960s when the U.S. population was inoculated with polio vaccine made from monkey cell cultures contaminated by the virus. The contaminated vaccine was no longer used after 1963. Even so, the virus can be found today in both adults and children. The exact means by which the virus is transmitted from person to person is unknown, although the virus is apparently present in blood and other bodily fluids, including breast milk. Normally, SV40 kills most human cells it enters because it keeps making copies of itself inside the cell until the cell dies. Because the infected cell dies, no cancer can occur.

Type in health and fitness into your web browser and you will be inundated with thousands of results, all pertaining to health and fitness in the Western world. Try keying in health and fitness in Africa; you get nothing, completely zilch. Does this mean health and fitness is exclusive to the West? Regina Jere-Malanda tries to find the answer. “Hey folks, you have reached a special page on this wcbsite dedicated to all ot us in Africa who are working nut bard at our local hardcore gyms, in our backyards, with limited and improvised equipment, training without the advantages Americans or Europeans have.” is how the website greets you. 1 lurrah, yes Africa does have gyms. Special? Indeed it is. Garlanded with pictures ot super-fit African men, only a visit to this Accra-based wcbsite will help explain my amazement, or is it glee. “Bodybuilding [and fitness] in Africa is quite different from the Western type of bodybuilding,” says NTPowerHouse. “Here no drugs, no steroids, no supplements or protein powders. Wc simply dont have the means to afford that! Anyway we are not complaining. The Western media often refers to Africa as a place of catastrophes, civil wars, famine and other forms of atrocities. It is our aim to uncover the treasures of Africa that have long been hidden by this negative perception.”
I enjoyed reading the Annual Health Fitness section (July 2008) of the magazine. It was very motivating. It also encouraged my husband and me to work together as a team in efforts to keep our health, nutrition and exercise in check. I hope the health and fitness section of the magazine continues its tradition. There are a lot of health and fitness magazines on shelves, but there is nothing tailored to the African-American community. Chula Vista, Calif.

vegetable garden

WHAT is the new rose variety of the moment? What will the potato of the future be? This week we begin a series on the latest introductions. Seed merchants and horticulturists have always developed new varieties for commercial use, but they are now responding to demand from private growers. In supermarkets we are offered frilly, rosy salads once only seen in Mediterranean markets. Why should garden centres be any different? Salad gardeners have seen many new arrivals over the last five years. Most are easy to manage - and still new enough to excite comment. Cut-and-come-again continuity lettuces, Italian misticanza (a selection of different salad leaves), red oak-leafed lettuce and red cos are a few examples. For winter salads, red chicory, corn salad, frizzy endive and Chinese cabbages are also relatively new. The best range is offered by Suffolk Herbs. Pink Fir apple was the first of the salad potatoes to be found in private gardens. It is a knobbly, but delicious, waxy potato that still tastes new at Christmas. Belle de Fontenay and Charlotte are more conventional looking. They are available from Marshalls, which also has a new First Early called Accent. This variety may turn out to be the potato of the future.
TO SOME PEOPLE, A GARDEN suggests vegetables planted in beeline-straight rows. Flowers and fancy garden designs, to them, are mere frills. But the two interests have a long history in shared beds, and they need not exclude one another. The potagers of that day were sheltered from seasonal extremes by brick walls up to 13 feet high, behind which gardeners produced tender asparagus for the kings table in December, strawberries in April, figs in early June. Extravagant brick walls are a luxury most American gardeners must do without, but we can nearly always count on the shelter of neighborshouses, garages and fences to create favorable microclimates in our yards. Rosemary Verey, a British garden designer and author, discovered in her own garden at Barnsley House in Gloucestershire that even a low hedge of boxwood, the traditional edging around a formal potagers geometric beds, provides a surprising amount of protection.A strong design should be the foundation of a formal potager. Garden history books are a rich source of plans that translate easily to the garden with the help of stakes and string. Most designs start h a square or rectangle divided by crossing paths. Small beds are arranged symmetrically among the paths in simple, repeating patterns. Combinations of basic shapes — squares, rectangles and triangles — can result in vigorous and pleasing patterns.

mailing list
November 7th, 2008
Good mailing lists can be difficult to find, and difficult to utilize in a timely fashion, but extremely powerful if used properly. The following are some general guidelines that can make mailing lists more effective. Since general rules may not apply to your goods or services, your business should develop a performance chart that identifies results on a month-to-month basis. You will find that there are clear sales variations relating to the month in which the mailings go out, and these variations can give you a formula for when you should be spending your money on mailing. After a few years, you may surprise yourself with the accuracy with which you are able to predict the response to your mailings. One of the most important factors in testing your mailing performance is the number of names needed to get accurate results. You will not be able to develop a true pattern if your sample size is too small, and you will be wasting a lot of money if your sample is too large and the mailing fails. The cost of testing is high, but your chances of success go up dramatically if you can find specific lists that show great results for the products or services you are trying to sell. Not too many years ago, it was economically prohibitive to go beyond basic market segmentation such as geographic by region or demographic items such as gender, occupation, marital status and age. Today, with advancements in computer technology, it is amazing the amount of behavioral and environmental factors that result in additional market segmentation. It is easy to get information on cultural patterns that may be keys to the success of your mailings. It has been proven, for example, that purchasers decisions are not based simply on economic ability to purchase but are greatly dependent on their tendency to buy. The tendency to buy is in turn highly dependent on social influences. If a person lives in a neighborhood where it is expected that everyone will have certain trappings, that person is much more likely to acquire such trappings regardless of income level. Consequently, it is important to determine the class to which the potential buyer aspires, rather than the income class to which the potential buyer belongs. Zip codes have been used effectively by many direct marketers because there is a tendency for individuals to cluster with others of the same social class. This approach can be problematic, however, because metropolitan zip codes may contain multiple neighborhood clusters. For example, there may be a housing cluster of one economic group surrounded by different economic or cultural groups. You can qualify your mailing list by refining characteristics that will identify the cluster you want. For example, you can add such factors as automobile ownership, poverty level, specific equipment such as air conditioning or number of bathrooms, dishwashers, freezers, etc. You can designate owner vs. renter, income level, family size, occupation, education and many other characteristics. Over a $100 million worth of products are sold each year through mail order and direct mail. Mail lists provide an easy entry into a market, but they only work effectively for certain types of products and services. Pinpoint your customers through specialized publications and mailing lists, and then monitor where your results are coming from. It is hard to test most business ideas. Inexpensive market research can give some guidance, but testing in mail order and direct mail sales can let you know if you have a winner before you make a large financial commitment. Well thought-out mailing lists can be effective at almost any stage of a businesss development. home theater systems
November 7th, 2008
The phrase “home theater” used to be only a dream for most people, but the number of home theaters is growing. A theater-style setting would include speakers behind the viewers as well as in front, and a sound system sophisticated enough to provide separation from side to side and from front to rear. The intangible factor is the size and shape of the room; its easy to buy the wrong equipment for the setting. ONeil cites statistics showing that only about 7 percent of homes currently have home theaters, but that figure is expected to skyrocket to around 60 percent in the next few years. The Sony Showcase has nine different home theater displays set up in the store, at 4800 West Saginaw.
Ultimately, the two competing systems will thrive or wither depending upon the care and intelligence with which the soundtracks and musical releases are recorded. Certainly, both processes offer some great software for home theater enjoyment. I wouldnt want to do without either Dolby Digital or DTS. Currently, I would favor Digital Dolby if restricted to a single choice because it provides the widest range of software. Indeed, given the current market with both laserdiscs and DVDs, Digital Dolby has the clear edge in software. Still, I hope that the splendors of DTS and the addition of digital musical offerings will thrive as well. Competition should provide us with economical and multiple choices in home theater software. The success of DTS in cinemas should provide a growing catalog of DTS software especially in DVD software. The Millenniums decoder is currently providing me with DTS sound. I have been using it with a set of matching JBL speakers (right, left, center, and rear) coupled with an MK powered subwoofer. The Millennium decoder can be used directly with an amplifier to decode and preamplify the DTS sound. Setup was simple and straightforward. I patched the channels in a Rotel RB-985 five-channel amplifier and patched the MK subwoofer in directly to the decoder. Sound levels were set using a Radio Shack sound level meter. The volume was adjusted with the Millenniums volume control and the results were quite remarkable. I consider the Millennium unit to be a $ensible choice for anyone who has a home theater set up that includes a solid Dolby Digital Decoder. The option to provide domestic Digital Theater Sound is irresistible to any home theater addict and when one can do this without investing in a new laserdisc player (most modern LD players include digital outputs that can be fed into the Millennium) and without scrapping ones existing system, the price for this trait is very modest indeed.
By comparison, even the biggest of big-screen TVs are peanuts. Trite. Insignificant. Small potatoes. Cheap n nasty. One joins the really big league in home movie set-ups when you have a complete theater in your home, costing anything from $30,000 to upwards of a million dollars. Reeses company, A Creative Theater, is at the moment midway to finishing a Marco Island project that will have an Australian theme, with walls upholstered in crocodile-type fabric, a multiple-seat arena and full stage with motorized drapery for complete theater effect.

With 30 different sections, each reflecting an area of the Museum, the shop offers lots of variety, from decor to books. Integrity is paramount to Nancys purchasing philosophy. Whichever country were representing, its a very authentic product, she says. And whenever possible they are hand-made, one-of-a-kind items. Before joining the ROM, this Canadian native served for 28 years as a buyer and retail general merchandise manager for several major department stores in Canada, overseeing apparel, accessories, jewellery, and cosmetics. Thinking the retail business would be a temporary gig when she started out, Nancy soon got hooked on the excitement of the businesss constant change. Youve got to be on top of the next trend and you want to be there first, she admits. Retail gets into your blood. Buying typically takes place 6 to 8 months in advance, and to be successful, she says, you have to be up on the latest international trends. Being on trend is what the ROM Museum Stores new designer product lines are all about. Look for accessories, stationery, home decor, and must-have gadgets with unique, fun designs.

Juices and smoothies companies are locked in the battle for young hearts and minds. Exploiting the space left by the clampdowns on fizzy drinks in schools and on the advertising of those drinks to children, manufacturers are striving to copitalise on their health credentials to make the most of this new opportunity. It remains to be seen, though, whether the efforts of smoothies or pure juice companies will ultimately bear most fruit. Juice companies are making similar moves. The crossover between the education and retail sectors is becoming increasingly apparent as kids and parents seek out the same type of health drinks they enjoy at school to have at home says Richard Cooke, sales and marketing director for Calypso Soft Drinks. The company has broadened its range of varieties, pack styles and sizes to gain favour with mums and in schools. It also now offers pure fruit juices in cuplets, cups, cartons and bottles.
C HILDREN Although this effort at misguided protectionism is usually well meant, it is unlikely in most instances to be either successful or helpful. To explain why this is true, this entry explores how death and death-related events impinge on the lives of children and what their significance is for such lives. In addition, this entry considers the elements of a constructive, proactive program that helps children in their interactions with death and death-related events.Children as Harbingers of the Future and Repositories of HopeFor many people in American society, children represent ongoing life and the promise of the future. In them, many hopes and ambitions are embodied. They foreshadow what is yet to come and act as a pledge of its surety. In a special way for females, they enter into life by emerging from their mothers bodies. In addition, human children are vulnerable in special ways and for an unusually prolonged period of time. They call upon their adult caregivers to care for them. Their presence in adult lives is, more often than not, a source of pride and delight. As they grow and mature, children become their own persons and their parents companions. In some cases, eventually they become caregivers of the adults who raised them. All these descriptions are true for ones natural children, as well as for those who are adopted or are foster children, and even when the latter are of a different ethnicity or culture.
How To Cure Insomnia

Wake up calls you dont want ONE HUNDRED MILLION Americans fail to get a good nights sleep. For 20 million of those the reason is obvious-they work the night shift. The rest all have sleeping problems, ranging from insomnia-the most common cause of nighttime wakefulness and inability to fall asleep-to sleep apnea, certainly the most dangerous disorder in terms of its potential for putting unwanted stress on the cardiovascular system.
Clinicians Guide to Sleep Disorders, edited by Nathaniel F. Watson and Bradley V. Vaughn New York: Taylor Francis, 2006. Hardcover, 416 pp., $199.95. The Clinicians Guide to Sleep Disorders serves these functions quite adequately. In the first two chapters, the approach to a patient with a sleep complaint and diagnostic procedures in sleep medicine are covered. The book then addresses common sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep-related movement disorders, sleep-related breathing disorders, narcolepsy, parasomnias, and circadian rhythm disturbances, each in a separate chapter. The book ends with chapters on sleep disorders in certain populations such as children, women, and the elderly. The last chapter addresses the future of sleep medicine.

Relationships with family and friends matter a great deal to children and are also important to long-term emotional and psychological development. The United Kingdom compares poorly in that area with other countries. Most distressingly, we have the lowest proportion reporting that their peers are kind and helpful - less than half say that is the case compared with more than 80 per cent in Switzerland.
In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co parent. Co-parent is also the name given to the partner in a homosexual relationship who shares the household and parenting responsibilities with a childs legal adoptive or biological parent.
The home which was owned by the family prior to a divorce or separation is referred to as the family home in many state laws. In court settlements of divorce and child custody issues, the sale of the family home may be prohibited as long as the minor children are still living there with the custodial parent. The sale of the home may be permitted (or required to pay the noncustodial parent his or her share of its value) if the custodial parent moves or remarries, or when the children leave home to establish their own residences.
The term extended family traditionally meant the biological relatives of a nuclear family; i.e., the parents, sisters, and brothers of both members of a married couple. It was sometimes used to refer to the people living in the household beyond the parents and children. As family relationships and configurations have become more complex due to divorce and remarriage, extended family has come to refer to all the biological, adoptive, step-, and half-relatives.
Government agencies and other statistics-gathering organizations use the term head of household to refer to the person who contributes more than half of the necessary support of the family members (other than the spouse); in common usage, the head of household is the person who provides primary financial support for the family.

The classical world obsessed the founding fathers. The Roman republic, wrote Alexander Hamilton, attained to the utmost height of human greatness. His generation–classicists who read Polybius, Plutarch, Cicero, Sallust, and Tacitus–embarked on a perilous enterprise in establishing a republic, and for precedents they looked across the centuries to Greece in the age of Pericles and to Augustan Rome. The classics supplied a large portion of the founders intellectual tools. They understood that intellectual and political independence were the defining characteristics of their Greek and Roman heroes, who had formulated the revolutionary theories of popular sovereignty, natural law, and mixed government. They learned from the political horror stories of the ancient historians that liberty was as precarious as it was precious. The founders used classical symbols and allusions to communicate, to impress, to persuade, and to legitimize their cause. In late 1782, nearing the close of the war, the Confederation Congress officially announced that a new age had arrived and that a new historical era was at hand, summing it up with symbolic simplicity by inscribing the Great Seal of the United States with Latin phrases from Virgil: NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM (A new cycle of the ages), ANNUIT COEPTIS (God has approved our beginnings), and E PLURIBUS UNUM (Out of many, one)–the last two, incidentally, composed of thirteen letters each. The institutions of this first generation of the American Republic were also markedly Greco-Roman in inspiration. The senior legislative body was called the Senate–the name of the elders council of the Roman Republic–and met in the Capitol–a building named after one of the Seven Hills of Rome. In 1811 the architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe predicted that Philadelphia would become the Athens of the Western world. In November of the same year Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner moved their silversmithing and jewelry firm to that city from Boston and went on to create the superlative neoclassical presentation pieces featured in this issue. Jeffersons first major public project as a classical revival architect was the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond in 1785. His revolutionary proposal, which was rejected as too expensive, was based on the Maison Carree at Nimes (16 BC) and involved the construction of three separate buildings, one for each branch of the government. While in Nimes, Jefferson had gazed at the Maison Carree for so many hours (like a lover at his mistress) that he claimed: The stocking weavers and silk spinners around it, consider me an hypochondriac Englishman, about to write with a pistol, the last chapter of his history. A few years later he explained to James Madison: You see I am an enthusiast on the subject of the arts. But it is an enthusiasm of which I am not ashamed, as its object is to improve the taste of my countrymen, to increase their reputation, to reconcile to them the respect of the world, and to procure them its praise.
George Alsop, who spent four years as an indentured servant in the household of Thomas Stockett in Baltimore County, was Marylands first propagandist, trying to lure settlers from England with his pamphlet. The colony had only been settled since 1634, two years after George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, gained proprietary control of the Chesapeake region. From the town of Saint Marys the colonists spread north along the Potomac River and settled around the many inlets that form the convoluted region of the upper Chesapeake Bay. Marshy tongues of land determined property lines more than geometric principles of land settlement. Marylands early economy was based on tobacco, which became the colonys medium of exchange for clothing and other manufactures and to pay taxes, tithes, and fines. Tobacco was also the chief export to England and a very profitable one. It was shipped from the wharves on the property of the planters, since roads were primarily muddy paths and nearly all plantations were near the water. However, the exorbitant import duties levied on tobacco in England and the charges exacted by the importers for credits on manufactured goods had diminished growers profits by the time of the American Revolution. Nineteenth-century urban and industrial development of the eastern seaboard bypassed tidewater Maryland and left its few towns, Chestertown among them, distinctive for their isolation. Chesapeake Bay itself separated southern Maryland from the Eastern Shore. The former consisted of tidewater flats laced by streams and inhabited by a rural society of former slaveholders that dwindled with the gradual loss of tobacco revenue and attracted few outsiders to replace them. The Eastern Shore was also something of a backwater, although a distinctive one. Cut off by the Delaware River on the northeast and the bay on the west, the people developed a spirit of separateness and self-conscious identity. Between 1776 and 1851 they tried five times to secede or establish their right to do so under the Maryland Constitution. In 1809 the assembly created what came to be called the Eastern Shore Compact by the terms of which one of the two United States senators from Maryland had to be from the Eastern Shore. To this day in Maryland the term waterman refers to the Eastern Shore native who follows any one of the livings provided by the abundant marine life–and there is hardly a native who does not live near the water.
The sea both separates the continents and provides the means by which the worlds peoples have mingled. Precariously bridging the gap is the sailing ship, among the most successful inventions of human ingenuity, which both baffles and harnesses the wind, mimicking the mutability of the sea itself. At first when sails triumphed over oars, a large square sail was rigged on the mainmast while two smaller sails fore and aft gave the ship maneuverability. With time, more sails were added to increase performance, and rigging was honed during ever longer voyages of discovery. By early in the sixteenth century, the sailing ship had reached such technical sophistication that little remained but tinkering to meet new demands. The introduction of heavy guns for naval warfare and the need to transport larger cargoes faster led to stouter hulls and more masts for more sails. When Admiral Horatio Nelson defeated the combined Franco-Spanish fleet off Cape Trafalgar on October 21, 1805, Britain was assured a maritime supremacy that remained unchallenged for a hundred years. Pax Britannica cleared most sea-lanes of pirates and hostile navies, making them safe for trade. Merchant ships no longer felt the need to carry cannon for protection, and regularly scheduled sailings began to be instituted. The first instance of steam adapted to propel ships dates to the late eighteenth century in France, where small boats with side-mounted paddle wheels were tested on rivers. By early in the next century, largely thanks to American innovations, steam came into its own. In 1807 Robert Fultons North River Steamboat began regular commercial service on the Hudson River, and in 1819 the Savannah steamed away from its eponymous port in Georgia and arrived twenty-seven days later in Liverpool.

reduce cholesterol
November 7th, 2008
NHLBI and NCEP recommend that children age two or older who have a family history of premature heart disease or at least one parent with high blood cholesterol be evaluated for high cholesterol. This recommendation was made, according to NHLBI, because there is strong evidence that heart disease and risk factors for heart disease such as high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, inactivity and smoking, are influenced by family health history or family lifestyle practices. In addition, there is strong evidence that suggests high cholesterol in children progresses slowly into adulthood where it often leads to coronary heart disease. To measure your total blood cholesterol level, a health care professional will take a small blood sample from your finger or arm. The NCEP recommends a fasting complete lipoprotein assessment-sometimes referred to as a complete lipoprotein profile-to accurately evaluate blood cholesterol levels. (See the Overview section of this topic at this Web site for a discussion of the fasting complete lipoprotein assessment.) Your health care professional may also order expanded cholesterol testing, such as the Vertical Auto Profile (VAP) and Berkeley tests. These tests identify the levels of certain types of LDL cholesterol and provide more accurate reading of your overall risk of cardiovascular disease.
| Parental cholesterol level higher than (mg/dL) | Children screened, % |
|---|---|
| 200 mg/dL | 63.5% |
| 220 mg/dL | 44.3% |
| 240 mg/dL | 25.1% |
| 260 mg/dL | 18.1% |
| 280 mg/dL | 15.3% |
| 300 mg/dL | 13.9% |
Researchers have attempted to assess which family factors are most likely to predict elevated cholesterol levels in children. Factors that seem likely to predict high cholesterol levels in children are family history of cardiovascular disease and parental cholesterol level. The above table illustrates the percentage of children who would be screened for elevated cholesterol if parental cholesterol level is used as a factor in making the decision when to screen. These percentages represent the results of the Lipid Research Clinics Prevalence Study, reported in March 1992. In general, most pediatricians recommend that all children and adolescents eat a diet low in saturated fatty acid, low in total fat, and low in cholesterol.

AUTOMOBILE LEASINGIt is also important to note, however, that there can be hidden costs associated with leasing. For example, many dealers charge a variety of lease-end fees. A disposition fee of several hundred dollars is common for consumers who do not wish to purchase the car. In addition, dealers often levy excessive wear and tear charges against customers when they turn in their vehicle (typical charges are for significant paint scratches, large windshield cracks and chips, upholstery and carpet burns, mismatched or bald tires, etc.). According to Business Week, dealers dun customers for such charges on nearly 30 percent of leased vehicles, charging an average of $1,600 per vehicle. In addition, some dealers establish maintenance rules for leased vehicles and charge fees when consumers fail to perform the required maintenance. In some cases, there are higher liability insurance requirements for leased vehicles than for those acquired through a purchase arrangement, which also costs consumers more money. Finally, most dealers include a premature termination clause in the lease contract and charge consumers a disposition fee, the cars residual value, and the remaining lease payments to end the lease early.
AutomobileFords first venture into automobile assembly with the Model A involved setting up assembly stands on which the whole vehicle was built, usually by a single assembler who fit an entire section of the car together in one place. This person performed the same activity over and over at his stationary assembly stand. To provide for more efficiency, Ford had parts delivered as needed to each work station. In this way each assembly fitter took about 8.5 hours to complete his assembly task. By the time the Model T was being developed Ford had decided to use multiple assembly stands with assemblers moving from stand to stand, each performing a specific function. This process reduced the assembly time for each fitter from 8.5 hours to a mere 2.5 minutes by rendering each worker completely familiar with a specific task.Ford soon recognized that walking from stand to stand wasted time and created jam-ups in the production process as faster workers overtook slower ones. In Detroit in 1913, he solved this problem by introducing the first moving assembly line, a conveyor that moved the vehicle past a stationary assembler. By eliminating the need for workers to move between stations, Ford cut the assembly task for each worker from 2.5 minutes to just under 2 minutes; the moving assembly conveyor could now pace the stationary worker. The first conveyor line consisted of metal strips to which the vehicles wheels were attached. The metal strips were attached to a belt that rolled the length of the factory and then, beneath the floor, returned to the beginning area. This reduction in the amount of human effort required to assemble an automobile caught the attention of automobile assemblers throughout the world. Fords mass production drove the automobile industry for nearly five decades and was eventually adopted by almost every other industrial manufacturer. Although technological advancements have enabled many improvements to modern day automobile assembly operations, the basic concept of stationary workers installing parts on a vehicle as it passes their work stations has not changed drastically over the years.

FAST FOOD FAST WOMEN STARRING: Anna Thomson, Jamie I Louise Laser, Robert Modica; Vincer and Austin Pendleton
by Eric Schlosser. Published by Houghton Muffin Co., New York, 2001. 288 pages. $25.00. In Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser doesnt just settle for writing a book about fast food. His book is fast food. But the book remains journalism, no more, no less. Maybe the current trend toward important social issues being served up by journalists shouldnt bother me so much — Tom Brokaw, after all, is now writing our history — but it does, all the same. The obvious is often draped with fact after fact, anecdote after anecdote. We learn that fast food is not especially good for us, that it is marketed to children, and that those who work behind the counter are poorly paid. And, in case you were wondering, a modern slaughterhouse is no place to take the family. It is filled with blood, gore, and workers who have some of the countrys most miserable and dangerous jobs.
female hair loss
November 7th, 2008
In Ask the Experts [October 2007, page 108], there was a question about essential oils and hair loss. Valerie Cooksley, director of the Institute of Integrated Aromatherapy in Houston, suggested a scalp treatment that combines different essential otis. Should this mixture remain on overnight? Could you also recommend some shampoos to go along with the essential otis?
The authors report temporal hair loss in patients after rhytidectomy. The objective was to illustrate the microscopic findings seen in the affected area of hair loss after rhytidectomy. The study presents a two punch biopsy on the areas affected and they were sent for histopathological evaluation. Histopathologic diagnosis was of telogen effluvium, in the general population 8.4% of rhytidectomy patients present with hair loss. This is a case report of a telogen effluvium nine weeks after rhytidectomy, with hair loss for the last six weeks. The causes of this type of telogen effluvium have not been well delucidated but it is believed that possible change in blood supply to the hair follicle, due to trauma, may play a role as well as stress. This patient did report swelling in the areas affected and it is possible that increase pressure played a role. All in all, the patients hair did re-grow one-year after surgery. We have included this interesting article to demonstrate that cosmetic surgeries and possibly cosmetic procedures may provide a due stress to the system that in some case may cause temporary hair loss. Hair loss is a common problem in men and women. Correct diagnosis of hair disorders is complex and requires evaluation of clinical presentation, history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Hair loss may be categorized as hair shaft abnormalities, permanent alopecia, or nonpermanent alopecia. Nonpermanent alopecia, the most common type, includes androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, and traction alopecia. The hallmark of this group is the possibility of complete regrowth with adequate treatment. Hair loss, or alopecia, is one of the most distressing disorders for both adults and children because our society places a great emphasis on physical appearance. Women, children, and adolescents with hair loss may be especially troubled by their appearance. The importance of the patients cosmetic concerns should not be underestimated. The etiology of alopecia may be somewhat confusing, as it is associated with a wide variety of causes. Some cases are best managed with reassurance and education, whereas others require medical evaluation and therapy. In this article, the hair cycle and the common causes of hair loss are reviewed. The most common types of hair loss — androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium alopecia areata, and traction alopecia — along with current treatment modalities are reviewed.

ACNE TREATMENTS have long been a cornerstone of the therapeutic skin care segment and this past year was no exception. Showing their strongest growth in years, products aimed at fighting blemishes, blackheads and pimples continue to be strong sellers in the nations mass retail outlets. While still anchored by such recognizable brands as Johnson Johnsons Clean Clear, Proctor Gamble Co.s Clearasil and Glaxo-SmithKlines Oxy, retailers report that new products and small brands made inroads over the past 12 months and are performing as well or better than their established counterparts. Category experts say the strong performance of acne treatments can be traced to two factors: manufacturers have made their formulations more effective, and more women are finding that what was once primarily a teenage problem is increasingly lasting into early adulthood.

If anyone should be an inspiration to the legions of non-Latin Europeans dutifully signing on for GCSE salsa classes, Larry Harlow should. Jewish, and the son of a band leader and an opera singer, Harlow veered abruptly towards Latin street music, rather than jazz or the classics at the Music Art High School in New York in the 1950s. “We were right beside Spanish Harlem - I used to listen to the music in the Latino grocers shops.” In the 1960s and 1970s his novel rearrangements of trombone, trumpet, violin and flute sections moved him to the centre of New Yorks Latin scene, working with artists like Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barreto and Willie Colon, the generation whose tough new hybrid sound first came to be called salsa. Harlow was the first artist to be signed by the seminal Fania label, co-wrote the Latin rock opera Hommy (Mark 2 version on the way), played for the famous Mohammed Ali-George Foreman fight in Zaire (a fiasco: everyone came for the fight, not the concert). The last decade has been spent with his own band touring the world. Last year conga ace Ray Barreto had the idea, inspired by the “fantasy band”, an ad hoc group of jamming jazz stars, of reconvening Harlow, himself, singer Adalberto Santiago and cuatro player Yomo Toro as the Latin Legends Band. Thus Harlow makes his first ever London appearance on Saturday (Barreto is a regular performer and Santiago was here last year). No longer a breath- bating prospect, perhaps, but a most intriguing one.
The MusicDar Williams discussed during her set the reasons why womyn should switch to organic, unbleached cotton tampons and other products such as sea sponges during our periods. The traces of dioxins found in grocery store tampons are hazardous carcinogens; at the same time, the male-owned “feminine hygiene product” industry is making an astounding profit off our bodies. Williams considered that the organic products are more expensive than mainstream ones, so she offered a few hilarious possibilities for overcoming the increased expense. One suggestion was to give female loved ones packages of woman-safe tampons for birthday and seasonal gifts. For her personal contribution, she stopped at every health food store and co-op on her way to the festival and cleared their shelves of boxes of unbleached tampons. At this point her traveling companions walked down the catwalk with an enormous basket full of tampons and began wildly flinging them into the audience. Gleeful womyn rushed the stage to scoop up flying tampons!Tribe 8 returned for the night stage this year. The audience was noticeably smaller than other nights because many women didnt attend the performance. I hadnt been to one of their shows before so I looked forward to seeing what all the fuss was about from previous years. Yes, Lynn Breedlove hacked off a dildo on stage in Hothead Paisan fashion. I had a visceral jolt of fascination and revulsion watching her saw at the big dildo with her huge, bright silver knife - an effect the whole show seems intended to engender. I enjoyed the show - it was energetic, joyful and participative, even while it fiercely expressed their anger about being women in a patriarchal world. Many women can relate to their first song, “The Mens Room is Down the Hall.” In this song Breedlove challenges those who judge her for not conforming to patriarchal norms of how a woman should dress and act.

Financial Markets and Financial Crises, edited by R. Glenn Hubbard, University of Chicago Press, 1991. This reviewer found it useful to group the ten papers into three categories. Four of the papers covered historical episodes or periods from US and world history when financial difficulties occurred. These four papers seemed closest to the spirit of the books title, and for the reviewer tended to be the most rewarding to read. Ben Bernanke and Harold James in their paper titled The Gold Standard, Deflation, and Financial Crisis in the Great Depression: An International Comparison, examine the contention that a mismanaged gold standard was responsible for the worldwide deflation of the late 1920s and early 1930s. By taking data for 24 countries, they look at the links between monetary contraction, deflation and depression in real output. Frederic Mishkin studies financial crises in the US from the panic of 1857 to the stock market crash of 1987. He applies the asymmetric information theories to these crises, and documents the breakdown in financial markets for each crisis. Rather than looking to the monetary aggregates as the cause of a crisis, the asymmetric information literature looks at a broader range of microeconomic factors such as the failure of a major financial institution, sharp declines in particular asset prices, disruptions in a particular financial market like the foreign exchange or commercial paper market, and so on. Thus, whereas the monetarist view focuses on bank panics and monetary aggregates to explain crises, the asymmetric information theory looks at more particular microeconomic failures in institutions or markets.
Most financial conglomerates in Norway are mainly engaged in hanking activities. Chart 3.1 summarises hanks assets and Huhilities. Loans to Norwegian households and enterprises account tor approximately two-thirds of hanks assets. Developments in credit risk are therefore of central importance for banks* earnings and for financial stability. This section primarily focuses on an analysis of hanks and changes in financial infrastructure. Developments in other financial institutions arc discussed in brief. Banks results have been solid so far this year. However, banks total pre-tax profits as a share of average total assets declined somewhat compared with the same period last year (see Chart 3.2). This is because operating income has fallen more than operating expenses. Bolh net interesi income and operating expenses have exhibited a falling trend over a longer period.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTSFinancial reporting is a broad concept encompassing financial statements, notes to financial statements and parenthetical disclosures, supplementary information (such as changing prices), and other means of financial reporting (such as management discussions and analysis, and letters to stockholders). Financial reporting is but one source of information needed by those who make economic decisions about business enterprises. The primary focus of financial reporting is information about earnings and its components. Information about earnings based on accrual accounting usually provides a better indication of an enterprises present and continuing ability to generate positive cash flows than that provided by cash receipts and payments.
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?Under newer and tougher standards, auditors are more involved than ever before in reducing the incidence of financial fraud. Statement on Internal Auditing Standards No. 3 requires the internal auditors to recognize the characteristic warning signs of internal fraud. Certified Fraud Examiners, many of whom have an audit background, are required to resolve allegations of fraud. Statement on Auditing Standards No. 53, promulgated by the Auditing Standards Board of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, requires external auditors to be more proactive in searching for fraud. Statement on Auditing Standards No. 54 requires the independent auditor to recognize major illegal acts, and in some instances report them. Legislation pending in the U.S. Congress may mandate even tougher standards. To meet their ever-expanding responsibilities in the area of fraud deterrence, internal auditors must be more “fraud-savvy” than ever before. During the last five years, Ive conducted interviews with McKinley Tabor and a few dozen other offenders. There is a lot we can learn from these financial Frankensteins.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

Medical: The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved a plan to design and build a $98 million ambulatory center in Lancaster to replace the High Desert Hospital, which was converted to an outpatient center in 2003. The county is working with the city to acquire the 15-acre property. Construction is expected to finish by late 2010 with full operation slated for 2013.
As I was completing my residency at Childrens National Medical Center, I, as many of my third-year colleagues, found myself wondering, where to go from here? Everything in our previous experience had been laid out in precise order, like check boxes waiting to be completed. Completing residency was the last check box on the list. We now had choices–fellowship, primary care, advocacy, etc. Enter Information Technology (IT). I can honestly say that, if I had been seriously considering a clinical job offer, I would probably be working in a clinic somewhere today. The lack of job, however, opened me to trying something new and different. When I heard about the informatics position, in which I would be able to help create a new computerized order entry system at Childrens, my hospital, I listened. and accepted the offer. Flash forward to Day One. My first day working in IT was definitely an experience to be remembered. I did not have to arrive at work until 8 am! I was able to sleep in! I actually had an office (cubicle) with my own phone and a laptop! As a resident, we had a lounge/classroom and had to vie for phone and computer usage wherever we went. In IT I had my own phone number and could give my new extension to whomever and could receive direct calls and messages.
DefinitionMedical physics is the use of physics principles in the practice of medicine. It is most often used to describe physics applications related to the use of radiation in medicine-for example, the physics of diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, and nuclear medicine. More broadly defined, medical physics may include the physics of other electromagnetic waveforms used in medical procedures such as electrocardiography (the study of electrical impulses in the heart) and laser surgery.
